San Saba Co., TX History

Abraham McCarley (1800-1854) and Sarah (McDaniel) McCarley (1812-1882) are the parents of the McCarleys who settled in San Saba County. They came here from Yell County, Arkansas where Abraham had served as a Captain, then later as Lt. Cot. in the Militia. He built the first water wheel on Spring Creek in 1839. There were nine children born to this union: Elizabeth, Nancy J., (married to Mose Harkey), Mary, Milander F., Thomas Benton, Jerome B., Samuel C. and Isaac C. (known as “Crege”).
Sarah’s youngest brother, Isaac McDaniel came to this county in the early days. Family members relate the story of how she would cry when she received letters from Texas telling about the Indian raids. She was fearful of her brother losing his life to these raiders. She was saddened at the thought of never seeing her baby brother again. However as we know Isaac lived to see his family grown. Samuel C. MeCarley was here when San Saba County was organized. His home was the meeting place for some of the first Commissioners Court meetings. Milander and Thomas Benton MeCarley came to the county around the turn of the century.
