On 4th March 1862, George Washington Peel, leaving his wife and three young children at home, enlisted with the 34th Calvary, Company A, Texas Volunteer Regiment in Grapevine, Texas. Approximately two years later on 20th June 1864, George died of wounds and disease in Kiachi, Louisiana. At the time of his death, his children were George Thomas (Tom)-age 7, William Manning (Bill)-age 3, and Rufus Wilson(Ruffie)age 1.
